Preserving centuries of knowledge through textual preservation and practical application

Supporting lineage continuation

The Thai tradition of medicine descended from the Lanna system and developed with influence from other medical traditions. The underlying world view and the majority of the theory of Lanna and Thai Traditional medicine are based in Buddhadhamma.

There are many therapies found in both Lanna and Thai Traditional Medicine, including: natural medicine, nutrition and diet, physical therapies, rituals for healing, incantations, meditation, Reusi Dat Ton, astrology, palmistry, divination and Buddhadhamma, among others.

As Lanna traditional medicine has not been as influenced by modern medicine, it has retained many of its more esoteric and unconventional therapies, such as Tok Sen, Chet Haek, scraping, cupping and Ao Maan. These therapies are preserved primarily in the Lanna tradition and have been passed from practitioner to practitioner for centuries.

Textual Preservation

Texts and the oral traditions go hand in hand, representing the body of knowledge LTTM endeavors to preserve. Many texts are maintained within a lineage as practitioners study and learn. However, there are fewer and fewer young people interested in traditional medicine these days, leaving texts vulnerable to being lost forever.

Events

In addition to a body of knowledge, preservation requires practical and experiential application under the guidance of experienced practitioners. Sharing the theories, tools and applications with those interested in serious study and skill development is an aspect of preservation for LTTM.
